We’re practicing mindfulness each time that we bring attention to a body part and are aware that we are doing so. We typically do the body scan by lying down on the floor or a soft surface, but if that’s not possible for you, you can certainly do the body scan while sitting in a chair. Research suggests that people who practice the body scan for longer reap more benefits from this practice. Body scan meditation is a good way to release the tension you might not even realize you’re experiencing.
Body scanning involves paying attention to parts of the body and bodily sensations in a gradual sequence from feet to head. By mentally scanning yourself, you bring awareness to every single part of your body, noticing any aches, pains, tension, or general discomfort.
